JASONVILLE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — One local state park has been closed to the public since December 2 for a deer reduction hunt.
These reduction hunts are performed by nearly 60 selected hunters at Shakamak. The results of previous reductions are calculated to factor the size of future events. Property Manager Kenna Duguay says participants are chosen based on purchase of a hunting license or deer bundle package, which then gives them the option to apply for a state park reduction hunt.
“So we have deer reductions almost annually,” Duguay said. “Everything is done on a calculated scale, so we are trying to preserve our natural resources here in Indiana. You don’t want to have an overpopulation of deer, so we look at our acreage and how many deer are taken out every year.”
Officials say that the park will be back open to the public at 8 a.m. on December 4.
