TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— A member of the Social Services Division at the Vigo County Health Department (VCHD) was nominated for the Hero of Recovery Award in the “Recovery Coach of the Year” category.
Shonna Frye, the Certified Peer Recovery Coach, received the nomination November 19th by Mental Health America of Indiana. Frye and other members of the Social Services Division focus a majority of their work in the Vigo County Jail. Here they provide support and education for inmates. One of the ways they do this is through MRT or Moral Reconation Therapy, which is a systematic, cognitive-behavioral, step-by-step treatment strategy designed to enhance self-image and promote the growth of a positive and productive identity to bring about the development of higher stages of moral reasoning. More than 120 studies have shown the value of the MRT and that those that participate have a lower level of incarceration.
“Thank you, I am deeply grateful and humbled to be nominated for such an award.” said Frye
Frye has worked in the local recovery community for three years and in the news release is said to bring compassion, empathy, and empowerment to her work where she stated “the goal is to help people, give hope that recovery is achievable, to further build a supportive community.” The release went on to state “Members of the VCHD Social Services Division explain that they are not there to provide ‘help,’ but rather to contribute to a conversation and a process where we actively challenge each other, and where ‘recovery’ becomes a mutual, dynamic relational process and outcome.”
