TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— We spoke with the Vigo Co. Health Department about how to properly manage your food and leftovers on Thanksgiving.
Public health educator Shelby Jackson said it’s always important to monitor the temperature of foods that are being left and served for an extended amount of time. She said it’s also important for turkeys to already be pretty much thawed for tomorrow.
Jackson said the most common question they receive is how long leftovers will last.
“Leftovers can typically be in the fridge for about a week give or take a few days depending on the food items,” said Jackson. “If you freeze them, it can be anywhere from 3 to 6 months. Make sure that you are packaging them properly when you are putting them in the fridge or freezer at an appropriate time.”
Jackson says the health department wants to make sure everyone has a happy and safe Thanksgiving.
