TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— Indiana State University was one of 471 colleges that was recognized for the effort put in to increase nonpartisan student voter participation.
ISU received its recognition from the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge (ALL IN). The four main tenants that must be completed are participating in the challenge, sharing the 2022 NSLVE Reports with campus voting data with ALL IN, developing and turning in a 2024 democratic engagement action plan with ALL IN, and having a current signatory to ALL IN’s Higher Education Presidents’ Commitment to Full Student Voter Participation.
“This year we saw more colleges than ever before step up their efforts to ensure that their students were registered and ready to make their voices heard at the ballot box,” said Jennifer Domagal-Goldman, Executive Director of the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge. “These Most Engaged Campuses are setting the standard for nonpartisan civic engagement work for colleges and universities across the country.”
ISU made efforts to increase voter engagement on campus in several ways. They hosted discussion panels with local elected officials, coordinated debates regarding area races, helped students register to vote, provided students with physical and digital informative resources, and hosted watch parties for big political events.
“I am incredibly proud of Indiana State University’s chapter of the American Democracy Project for their year-round efforts of civic duty and service to our campus and community,” Dr. Nancy Rogers, Vice President for Indiana State University’s Office of University Engagement said. “This award represents the high standard of involvement of our students and their continued efforts to increase voter turnout. Congratulations to our Sycamores and Alex Whitmore, Assistant Director of Community Engagement, on this deserving award.”
The ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge hopes to empower colleges and universities to achieve greatness in supporting student voter engagement through a nonpartisan lens. The challenge currently engages with 10.8 million students from more than 1,075 schools in all 50 states and D.C. and campuses can join the initiative here.
