TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – The Vigo County Education Foundation awarded over $40,000 in school wide grants Friday.
The grants, awarded to seventeen schools, will provide opportunities like author visits, theater productions, literacy initiatives and academic or attendance incentives.
The awards happened at Business and Bagels, an event that takes place twice a year. These events update the community about how the Vigo County Education Foundation is providing new learning opportunities at Vigo County Schools.
Benjamin Franklin Elementary School hosted the event Friday. Principal Tina Horrall explained the foundation’s support allowed the school to get a book vending machine. She said students can earn coins for the book vending machine through achievements such as good attendance, improved grades and being good citizens of the school.
The foundation has awarded over $3.7 million to schools and programs in the Vigo County School Corporation since 1984. Its efforts are supported by many local businesses and individuals in the community.
“The business community is our foundation. We are preparing young students to go into fields and careers they love, and it does start with these sorts of partnerships,” said Horrall.
The education foundation also thanked longtime supporter Indiana State University during Friday’s Business and Bagels event.
