FARMERSBURG, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The North Central Beta Club recently competed in the National Beta State Convention, and they came home with plenty of hardware.
Beta is one of the largest youth organizations in the United States. It prepares students from 4th to 12th grade to be successful in school and life.
“Beta was founded on the four pillars of Beta. These are academic achievement, character, leadership, and most of all, service.”
Throughout the year, students perform acts of service in the local community and then compete at the state convention.
One student, Brynley Grabbe, says there are many categories of competition.
“I personally compete in the academic tests and speech, others in the visual arts. There’s also on-site cake decorating this year. The big ones are art, tests, and speech.”
This year, North Central came home with 44 plaques across the different categories, and several students have moved on to compete at the national convention in Florida this summer.
Elyse Freeman says she enjoys this part the most.
“My favorite part is going to all the conventions and meeting a lot of different people and seeing how the personalities are. Most of the time, they are really exciting. They do a lot of different things and it’s really interesting learning about all the cultures and everything about Beta.”
Members of Beta, including Devan Freeman, say the club has helped them mature.
“If this sounds like a club to anybody that they would like to join, please talk to someone in your school. It’s an amazing opportunity, everybody can benefit from it. It has helped me grow my leadership and social skills immensely.”
The National Beta Convention is still a few months away. The students will head down to Orlando, Florida to compete in June.
