TERRE HAUTE Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Vigo County Health Department spoke with us Wednesday about what goes into restaurant health inspections.
Its public health educator Shelby Jackson said they separate violations into critical and non-critical categories. Non-critical are such things as a lack of hair nets and the overall dirtiness of the restaurant.
Critical can include employees not washing their hands and food temperatures being unsafe for consumption. Jackson said these inspections are important for the overall health of the community.
“The food inspections are critical to maintaining health within our community,” said Jackson. “If we don’t do these inspections, especially the follow up inspections, there can be an increase of food borne illnesses throughout our community.”
Jackson also added that these inspections are random so that restaurants cannot prepare ahead of time.
