TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Starting on January 1st of the new year, you will no longer have to pay a fare to ride a Terre Haute city bus.
The city has decided to begin fare free travel on city buses in 2025.
This decision comes after the city compared ridership numbers to other cities Terre Haute’s size and saw a much smaller population consistently riding city buses.
Director of Public Works in Terre Haute, Jesse Tohill, says bus fares are a very small percentage of the transportation budget, as most of it comes from state and federal funding.
He says the city’s goal is public transportation will be used more, providing a boost to the entire local economy.
“Full buses going to and from restaurants, businesses, places of work. Really just the demand for public transportation to increase to the next level.”
Tohill says the city will provide more information as the new year gets closer on bus stops, routes, and rules for public transportation.
