VINCENNES, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— With little to no places to practice outdoor sports year-round in Vincennes, the Knox Sports Complex is trying to keep these home-grown athletes and families in the community.
Knox Sports Complex is a nearly 23-million-dollar project that will bring indoor swimming, tennis, pickleball, rock climbing, and more to Vincennes.
“Over the winter they kind of lose their skills because there is nowhere to do them unless they go an hour away which a lot of families can’t support financially or time-wise because of work restraints,” said founder of Knox Sports Complex Sally Bodensteiner.
In August of this year, the non-profit organization bought the land next to Clark Middle School in Vincennes to one day build this facility. Bodensteiner said they are now in the fundraising stage of the project.
“We plan to be fundraising for about a year to get a lot of grants written and applied for as well as do some local fundraisers as we are planning to 5 over 2025,” said Bodensteiner.
She said that these additions will not only improve the overall health of the community but the economy as well.
“I think it is important that the community supports this project because it is for the community and that is the main reason why we reached out to community leaders to make sure they were behind this because we didn’t want to do something that no one wants,” said Bodensteiner. “Overall, we have gotten good support saying that this is something that our community really needs.”
Bodensteiner said that they hope that fundraising goes well enough in 2025 for them to begin construction at some point in 2026.
