VINCENNES, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Washington Avenue in Vincennes has been reopened to traffic.
After a year and a half of construction, the road was officially opened Friday afternoon with a ribbon cutting ceremony from the mayor and city engineer.
Along with the newly paved road, the area now contains walkable sidewalks and more lighting.
The project, in total, cost around $8 million.
The Mayor of Vincennes, Joe Yochum, says the heavy flow of traffic in the area wasn’t the only reason for the construction.
“This is one of our major thoroughfares. More importantly, with the park here, there is a lot of foot traffic, and we didn’t have sidewalks down through here before this project. It’s about, not only the driving safety, but public safety with bike lanes and walking.”
The mayor says the road is completely open, but workers are still out finishing striping.
