TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Terre Haute City Council met today where votes were placed on two ordinances.
The first was a rezoning of the property located at 1250 Locust St.
The building used to be Gerstmeyer High School. It will now be transformed into a 50-unit housing development.
The developer of the housing is targeting residents of Terre haute, faculty of Union Hospital, as well as ISU students to rent out the units.
The attorney for the developer, Richard Shagley, says the building needs a complete overhaul. Yet, the first phase of the project is set to be done in less than a year.
“We anticipate breaking ground early in 2025, with move-in in August of 2025, for the first phase.”
During the meeting, Jesse Tohill, who is Director of Public Works in Terre Haute, gave the council his report for 2024.
He said the Public Works Department is on pace to come under budget this year and he is happy with their 2024 performance.
However, going into the new year, the department is asking for more marketing surrounding pet lincensing.
Pet owners are required to get a pet license from the city of Terre Haute every year, yet Tohill says they estimate only about 1% of pets in the community are registered.
“Animal care and response to animal requests are somewhat dependent on the funds that come in through this licensing. If we want to treat our animals better, also have safer communities, then we really need to double down on this pet licensing. Get everybody to step up and do their part.”
