TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Tuesday morning dozens of Prairieton residents attended the Vigo County Commissioners meeting over a proposed new Dollar General in the area.
After tabling the discussion about this project at their last meeting, the Vigo County Commissioners came to the conclusion to deny the construction of a new Dollar General in Prairieton. Commissioner Chris Switzer said that this was mainly due to the fact that Dollar General didn’t have a representative on hand to answer these questions.
“They had a representative from their development company and not Dollar General itself and its legal counsel come to a meeting where the public asked several questions but could not get their questions answered because no one from Dollar General was there,” said Switzer. “We found that to be intriguing on behalf of Dollar General as to why they wouldn’t have a representative there.”
Switzer added that the commission is typically pro-business, however, after both sides presented, it was hard not to be on the side of Prairieton residents.
“We heard all of that and took it into effect today on the decision to not rezone the property,” said Switzer. “I believe that the folks in Prairieton are happy. We are certainly pro-business, and we want businesses like this, but sometimes folks just don’t want it in their neighborhoods, and we saw that loud and clear over the last 30 days and we were just happy to represent the community.”
The opposing party can choose to appeal this denial, but Switzer said after numerous discussions he feels that the decision will remain as is.
