VINCENNES, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – November is National Diabetes Awareness Month and in recognition of that, the Knox County Health Department is offering free A1C fingerstick tests.
The tests will be available Wednesday, November 13, and Thursday, November 14.
The tests reflect your average blood sugar levels over the past two to three months. No testing is required.
Susan Yochum, the Community Health Nurse at the Knox County Health Department, explained that diabetes can lead to a variety of health issues.
“We need to take this seriously. Diabetes can lead to heart disease, blindness, kidney disease, loss of limbs and in many cases is preventable, and that’s one of the things that we want to get the word out,” said Yochum.
She added that’s what makes testing like this important.
“If you know what your blood sugar level is and you learn that it’s elevated or it’s moving upward, there’s a lot of things that we can do behaviorally to make sure that doesn’t increase or that you don’t get diabetes, or that it’s at least further down the road,” said Yochum.
