TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The oldest existing fire station, and former fire museum, in Terre Haute is being restored.
After years without proper financial support and repairs, the building started to fall apart earlier this year.
The city put up temporary barricades to block street traffic and have begun working with Indiana Landmarks on the issue.
This is a community partner that has been assisting Terre Haute with preserving its history.
The city is working with Indiana Landmarks to take ownership of the old museum and begin repairs immediately.
The Terre Haute Director of Public Works says the main problem right now is the street being closed.
“For our citizens out there, hopefully the fire museum is something that you are excited to see come back and this historic building preserved. But we also know that it’s been an issue with travel in the area so, really, our priority is getting that building sturdy. Getting it sured up, so that we can open 8th street back to traffic.”
The city says they do not want to demolish the building and are hoping to start work in the coming weeks.
