TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Election Day was a success for Republicans not only on a national level, but locally in Vigo County as well.
The 2024 general election showed an advantage for republicans in Vigo County. The bellwether trend was once again successful, as Donald trump won the county and the presidential election.
Dr. Levi Allen, an assistant professor in the department of political sciences at Indiana State University, says that a big factor in the party’s success was the result of the presidential race in Vigo County.
“We see that more at the local election,” Allen said. “You’re more willing to cross over more for a local race than a national race, because politics is still somewhat local, but the national coattails are hard to overcome. When you have a republican presidential candidate winning the county by 20 points, democrats are asking voters 20 percent to eat into that margin.”
Allen says that the nationalization of elections has led to more people voting for the side they identify with on a national level locally.
