PRAIRIETON, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — In response to widespread public opposition, Vigo County Commissioners tabled rezoning for a Dollar General store in Prairieton on October 8.
Wednesday evening, the Keep the Prairie in Prairieton Community Action Group hosted a community meeting to discuss conflicts of interest. Many residents expressed their concerns at area plan commission and county commissioner hearings.
There group also made an informal poll where the group members recorded 83% of respondents opposed, and several hundred local households have signed a petition against rezoning for the development. Those residents say that the proposed site of the new store will have negative impacts on property values, safety concerns, and affecting neighborhood quality of life.
M.C. Cindy Morgan said they are not against Dollar General they just want the store to be built in a different location.
“They wanna build it right next to our beautiful church and our prairie. we’re trying to keep the prairie in Prairieton. And it’s just not a good fit for our community. There’s a lot of other places that are already zoned commercial on down 63 or up 63.”
The decision on the rezoning will take place at the next County Commissioners meeting on November 12, at 9:00 a.m. For more information on the Keep the Prairie in Prairieton Community Action Group you can contact them at 317-503-3777.
