TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — November is Men’s Health Month and to bring awareness to the topic, Horizon Health held their “Kickstart Your Heath” event.
Today at Cannonball Harley Davidson in Terre Haute, guests were treated to a live band, free food, and had a chance to win a 2024 Harley Davidson Low Rider.
Men of the local community were invited to the motorcycle dealership to have a safe and free space to speak with members of Horizon Health, without taking the time to schedule a hospital appointment.
Christina Hodgson, the Public Relations and Marketing Manager at Horizon Health, says an event like this allows the patients to come to them.
“We chose to have it at Cannonball Harley Davidson just to make it accessible to men. They’re out and about on Saturday afternoon, they typically don’t want to go to a hospital or clinic to see care. We will catch them where they are, and they can ask questions with Doctor Shanks and just enjoy their afternoon with us.”
Horizon Health put on this event to, not only bring awareness to men’s health in the local community, but also to show off their new, full-time urologist.
Dr. Michael Shanks says that November is also Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, and he stresses the importance of being knowledgeable and aware of that issue.
“As of 2022, about 250,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer and 3.3 million men, living currently, have prostate cancer. Screening is very important. 1 in 5 men, in America, will have prostate cancer. Just getting the word out about screening to those men that may not know about screening. The simplicity of that, which is just a simple blood test, which can lead us to treatment options if there is prostate cancer found.”
Dr. Shanks says if you want to get a screening or just speak with a professional, get in contact with your primary care physician and they can refer you.
