TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Officials in Greene County are warning the public about counterfeit money.
This comes after the Linton Police Department said several local banks and businesses reported the same counterfeit $100 bill.
Police say all of the bills seem to have the same serial number.
The department says that some that have accepted the counterfeit bills say it passed the marker test.
Banking Center Manager at First Financial Bank in Sullivan, David Wright, says the marker test is not the best way to determine a counterfeit bill.
“U.S. currency is made with a special ink that raises from the surface of the bill. You should be able to feel ridges where the ink is. It’s unique and it is, specifically, a counterfeiting avoidance thing about our money.”
Wright says that if businesses are worried about accepting counterfeit bills, reach out to your local bank for a training session on how to prevent it.
