GREENE CO., Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Greene County is in both the New Madrid and Wabash Valley Seismic earthquake zones. Many of the strongest quakes in recent years have occurred within these zones.
Tuesday evening, Greene County Emergency Management Agency and the Greene County Local Emergency Planning Committee held a mock earthquake exercise. Demonstrators talked about what you should do before, during, and after an earthquake.
The Director of Emergency Management for Greene County Roger Axe said seismologists have predicted that the earthquake could happen at any time. Depending on the magnitude of the earthquake, Greene County is in the number two zone for damages.
Axe said he wants to get people prepared for something that will eventually happen.
“It is not if, it’s when because the New Madrid Fault is is a ticking time bomb. It is gonna happen and nothing we can do will defuse this,” Axe said.
Axe also said the worst mentality someone could have when it comes to these type of disasters is, “it won’t happen here”.
