TEUTOPOLIS, Ill. (WTWO/WAWV) — After employees with the Illinois Department of Corrections at Lawrence Correctional Center took to the streets Thursday, to raise awareness of the dangers they face, Illinois State representative Adam Niemerg (R-Dieterich) has now requested a meeting and tour of two prison facilities in his district.
According to a press release from Rep. Niemerg, the goal of this tour is to address the safety concerns from illegal drugs and attacks on correctional officers and other staff. The press release goes on to say, that both Rep. Niemerg and Senator Chapin Rose will plan these meetings in the next several days.
“This situation has been brought to my attention by multiple DOC employees and I have been in contact with retired and active employees to reach a solution and fix these problems. I will be touring the Robinson and Lawrenceville facilities with Senator Rose to see first-hand what is going on and invite Governor Pritzker to join us to learn more about the concerns for the safety of correctional guards and staff and the assaults & drug smuggling.” said Rep. Niemerg.
Attention is being drawn because of reports of illegal and potentially lethal controlled substances that are allegedly being smuggled into correctional centers.
