BRAZIL, Ind. (WTWO-WAWV) — A big day in Clay County as a special traveling monument made its way to Brazil.
The Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall made a pit stop at the Great Dane facility near Brazil before taking US-40 through Brazil to North Clay Middle School. Vietnam veteran Lyle D. Rolison says that it brings back tough memories.
“That’s what they didn’t do when we came home,” Rolison said. “We weren’t looked at like that, we never got anything like this. You were lucky to get hit in the head, so maybe we’ve come a little farther than we think.”
He added that Americans over the last few decades come to honor service members whether or not they agree with the politics behind a conflict. Event co-chair Leesa Nesty says it brings positive energy to the community.
“In the news there are a lot of bad things that you hear about, but at least for the next few days, patriotism, and honor, and gratitude to our Vietnam veterans and all veterans is alive and well in Clay County.”
Rolison says that the veterans are touched by the honor and gratitude.
“Well, this is the reception we should have gotten 41 something years ago. I was real impressed with the people of Brazil today. They were out in force, they were glad to see us, and I think things have finally come home to roost.”
The wall will remain in Brazil for viewing through October 20. For more information, click here.
