SHELBURN, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Friday morning Indiana Secretary of State Diego Morales helped young people understand the importance of voting with a mock election.
6th grade teacher at Northeast East Elementary School Jennifer Strahle said it is never too early to learn the importance of voting.
“I wanted my students to take away how important the election is and that even though they are not yet old enough to vote, it is still important to know the process and that their vote really does count,” said Strahle.
Strahle said she hopes Morales’ message can teach these students a lot.
“With hard work, dedication, and them pushing through they can achieve anything that they put their minds to,’ said Strahle.
Secretary Morales said that his mission is to inspire the younger generations to chase their dreams.
“All of this stuff resonates with children,” said Morales. “In this process of teaching, we are encouraging them to shoot for the stars, to follow their dreams, to follow their passions, to never give up, study hard, make good grades, and then to pursue more education in the future.”
Morales said he hopes that these same students will be future leaders.
“I am taking these things to the next level to open the doors and pave the way and encourage the younger generation to perhaps follow my lead in hopes that maybe one of them will take my job someday,” said Morales. “Hopefully one of these kids from Sullivan County will be the next Secretary of State and we are planting those seeds this morning. That is all I am doing, and it is the best part of my job.”
Morales said that events like these are going to continue to be a key focus for him during his term in office.
