PARIS, Ill. (WTWO/WAWV)— A global medical device company awarded its highest honor to the Urology Department at Horizon Health.
Axonics presented its Center of Excellence award to Dr. Michael Shanks, head of Horizon Health’s Urology Department for its exceptional care for patients with bladder and bowel dysfunction. Only 2% of physicians using the company’s technology have received this award and Horizon Health is the only one to receive the award in central Illinois. To receive the award the physician has to provide Axonics treatments to at least 100 patients, with a minimum of 25 a year, with a dissatisfaction rate of less than 20%.
“I couldn’t do it without my entire team,” Dr. Shanks said. “I’m extremely pleased to be able to offer this advanced treatment option to our communities. For many patients, Axonics is a long-term solution for overactive bladder, fecal incontinence, and urinary retention.”
Axonics therapy involves a tiny implant under the skin that gently stimulates the sacral nerve, which restores normal communication between the brain and bladder and is clinically proven to help with bladder and bowel dysfunction. In a clinical study, 129 patients with urgency incontinence were treated with Axonics Therapy and after two years, 93% of patients had successful therapy and 94 percent of patients were satisfied with their therapy.
