TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Indiana State Police say that social media threats targeting schools have been a common theme lately.
Public Information Officer Sgt. Matt Ames says that ISP is also investigating in Putnam County, and there has been an incident in Avon as well. ISP urges parents to monitor their child’s social media activity, and for students to report suspicious posts to their school resource officer.
“If someone makes a social media threat or any threat towards any schools at all, there will be a full investigation,” Ames said. “That student may still think it’s something very simple, however, once the investigation is done and turned over to the prosecutor’s office, then you are going to find out, hey guess what, this wasn’t a funny matter. Unfortunately you are going to have criminal charges pinned against you.”
Ames added that school resource officers have gone through mandatory training to handle situations where a threat has been made.
