(SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind.) WTWO/WAWV – Next week, we mark the anniversary of the September 11th attacks on our country. Faculty, staff and students at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, placed memorial flags along “The Avenue” at the college.
Each flag represents a victim of the attacks on the World Trade Center, Pentagon, and a hi-jacked passenger plane that crashed in Pennsylvania.
The flags will remain up through September 12. They remind students at the college to remember the past.
“A lot of our current students were not alive when this happened like me myself I was born in 2004 so I was not here when 9/11 occurred but it’s extremely important to remember our history and to learn from it. These flags serve as the idea that this country can rebuild and that we need to stay united,” said SMWC Senior Hannah Harvey.
“It was an opportunity that just made sense. The generations that are here today attending classes they weren’t here in 2001 so it’s an opportunity to help the generations that are here remember what happened on 2001 and it’s an opportunity to display a flag for each life that was lost and remember those lives,” added Director of Alumni Relations Sarah Mahady.
This event is in partnership with Indiana State University. You will find flags at ISU between the Welcome Center and the Career Center.
