BRAZIL, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— A Brazil man who was taken into custody on May 12, 2023 for murder has now finally been sentenced.
Jon McGuff had been taken into custody after shooting a man 4 times in the chest in May of last year. After a lengthy court process, he now faces sentencing. Thursday the courts decided his sentence.
According to the sentencing order, on July 5 McGuff had entered a plea agreement to accept one of his charges, voluntary manslaughter, which is a level 2 Felony. The court took this plea into consideration and agreed to it Thursday, dismissing the murder charge and the charge of unlawfully carrying a handgun.
McGuff was sentenced to 20 years in the Indiana Department of Correction. McGuff was credited 521 served from his previous stints in Jail while awaiting sentencing from May 12, 2023 to December 18, 2023 and March 5, 2024 to August 20, 2024 and the day of sentencing. In total McGuff was also fined $10, as well as assessed costs of $189 and the public defender fee of $100. The amount of $12,000 was awarded in restitution in favor of the victim’s family.
