WEST TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Monday evening, The Vigo County School Corporation held a board meeting just two days before the start of the school year.
Superintendent Dr. Chris Himsel announced that the school corporation is using the $138,601 it received as being beneficiaries of the casino taxes to improve the overall high school student experience.
“We are able to provide an all sports pass for our high school students to be able to attend their respective high school’s home events,” he said. “We are using the casino money to replace what would have normally been the student ticket sales so the athletic departments can continue to provide the support they do.”
He said all students deserve to have these opportunities to show off their school spirit.
“All of our kids can now experience the high school environment and high school experience especially at different athletic events and different events throughout the year,” said Himsel.
Upgrades to the HVAC systems within numerous schools was also at the top of the agenda. Himsel says that one school is already complete, and the remaining schools are still waiting on the materials they need.
“We have made substantial work at the high school levels where they did all the work they could do in preparation for when those things are delivered so that when they are delivered, we have already done the work ahead of time so that we can immediately go in and get those installed and reduce the amount of time that it will take to get the fruition of that equipment up and running,” he said.
Himsel said that he hopes all these changes will lead to a very productive school year.
“We are continuously looking at how do we move forward, how do we support our kids, and how do we increase and make better quality learning experiences on a daily basis,” said Himsel.
The next school board meeting will be held on August 26 at 6:00 p.m.
