TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – The Civil Air Patrol summer encampment has been taking place this week at Indiana State University.
Kids of all ages have the opportunity to train in aviation, as well as life skills.
The Civil Air Patrol holds this encampment every year. They take place around the country as an introduction into the Civil Air Patrol program. Terre Haute is already familiar with the patrol and, this year, hosted the encampment for the state of Indiana.
“Terre Haute has been a good home for us this year. We do have a local unit that meets here at the National Guard base at the airport. They do have cadets that meet out there, they do have senior members that meet out there. We have an aircraft that works out of that base. We love Terre Haute as our home, and we hope to continue to be here.”
Maj. Joshua Bowers – Public Affairs Officer
Participants in the program can rise up a rank as quickly as every 56 days. One cadet, who has reached the Cadet Commander position, says that when she entered the program, her view on it changed.
“If you had asked me two years ago if I thought I would be Cadet Commander here at encampment, I would have told you no way, I would not be here. But here I am, because I have senior members who have invested in me, and I have cadets who I want to support and teach them how to serve our community as well.”
Elisa Miller – Cadet Commander of Summer Encampment
The summer encampment ends this Saturday, the 27th, with a graduation ceremony. It will be at Indiana State University and begin at 10:45 a.m.
