WESTVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — Nature and historical sites in Vermilion County are giving people a glimpse into the past and a look at the present in their parks this summer.
The Vermilion County Conservation District will be opening the first Sunday of every month to visitors at sites like the Pioneer Homestead Cabin and Nature Center of Forest Glen Preserve. Volunteers were on hand to welcome visitors and answer questions.
Volunteer Julie Colby said it’s a chance to celebrate natural history with friends and family.
“It’s really interesting to check it out,” Colby said, “We do have a lot of families that come here and with their kids and everything. And they also bring school children out here to just get more familiarized with Vermilion County.”
Kennekuk County Park is another spot visitors can see buildings from Vermilion County’s past. There’s an old grocery store, train depot, school and more to explore.
