TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Warm days and clear skies will cause local roadways to be packed.
Indiana State Police Public Information Officer Sgt. Matt Ames said highways will be full of locals and visitors who are going to work and headed on vacation.
“You are going to see people come into our area that are not accustomed to the types of intersections that we may have,” Ames said. “If you see an out of state plate or not an 84 or 77 on the license plate as an indicator of where they are from, you should back off a little bit.”
He said that you should never be distracted when approaching these intersections.
“The most important thing when a driver is coming up to an intersection that they are questioning how to get through it, number one they need to make sure that they are not driving while distracted,” he said. “Of course that means telecommunication devices, not drinking, not eating, it also means that they are not distracted by someone that is in the vehicle with them.”
Ames said this also means using every safety measure that is available to the driver.
“Make sure that they are using their side and rear-view mirrors, and they are using everything that they have to be able to see what is going on around them,” Ames said. “As they come up to the intersection, they need to reduce their speed, make sure they are using their turn signals to indicate that they are going left or right, and also INDOT has placed information signs as they come up to the intersection.”
Ames said that these little things will make things a lot easier for all parties involved.
“That is going to provide more safe roadways for the public, and that is what we want to be able to do as safety personnel,” he said.
Ames added that if you do see an accident that is unattended, pull over with caution, call 9-1-1 and see if those involved seem injured so they can send all of the proper personnel to the scene.
