FARMERSBURG, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Indiana State Police has announced that extra local and state patrols will be on the roadways during the holiday weekend.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has provided extra funds to state and local police departments in an attempt to make the roads safer for everyone. Sergeant Matt Ames says that there can be a lot of dangers associated with busy roads and everyone needs to be on high alert.
“Memorial Day weekend is the start of the summer season for most people even though it’s unofficial,” he said. “We are going to see a lot of traffic out here on both our US routes, state routes, and interstate.”
Ames added that officers will be looking for intoxicated drivers and people that are driving aggressively. Drivers can protect themselves with a couple easy steps.
What we’re asking for motorists to be is number one be courteous and respectful towards each other,” he said. “Be aware of what is going on around you the entire time.”
The high travel volume is expected to last through Monday, but drivers can work together to keep the road safe.
