SULLIVAN, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – All Sullivan County jail inmates have been moved to the county’s new jail.
Sullivan County Sheriff Jason Bobbitt said the inmates were moved on Wednesday. He added that the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office, Vigo County Jail staff, and Indiana State Police assisted Sullivan County with the moving process.
The new jail holds 197 beds and is larger than the previous one, a step taken to address overcrowding.
“We’re not going to have to house county inmates out of county anymore,” Bobbitt said. “That’ll save the county a lot of money. We’ll be able to keep them here.”
Bobbitt said some things like old records still need to be moved to the new building, but all functions of the sheriff’s office are now happening from the new space.
