TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A memorial watch was underway Wednesday evening at the Terre Haute Police Department’s Headquarters. It’s in observance of National Peace Officers Memorial Day.
During the ceremony the honor guard will stand watch over the wreath, from 4 p.m. until midnight. The public was welcomed to visit during the memorial. It’s being held in conjunction with a memorial watch that was underway in Washington D.C.
Officials said it’s a way to show their support.
“We’ve participated in multiple ceremonies at Washington D.C. or in Washington D.C., and it’s something that hits home for us. And we want to show our support,” Sergeant Justin Sears said.
“It is something that’s very personal to us. We unfortunately have experienced line of duty deaths. I know several of us know officers from other departments that have been killed in the line of duty too. So, these aren’t just random names on a memorial,” THPD Officer Don Toney said.
