BRIDGEPORT, Ill. (WTWO/WAWV) – Some local students in Illinois got the opportunity to see a robot that helps workers assess potential environmental hazards.
The robot prototype demonstration took place Tuesday at Red Hill Junior/Senior High School in Bridgeport.
The robot was developed for Chevron Environmental Management Company. Scientists from Chevron Technical Center worked with Carnegie Mellon University and HEBI Robotics to develop the robot.
The robot is designed to help workers safely check environmental conditions in situations where hazardous chemicals or extreme heat may be present.
“The idea is when we need to go out in the field and collect data about environmental impacts in an area, normally we have people go do that but of course that exposes them to some level of hazards, so if we can send a robot out instead and take the people out of the area, that’s safer for our people,” explains Jeff Moore, Public Affairs Advisor for Chevron Environmental Management Company.
Chevron also recently discussed its work at the former Texaco Refinery Site in Lawrenceville. The company is managing the environmental clean-up of soil and groundwater at the site.
