TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)– A local event that helps raise money for brain cancer research returned for its third year at Deming Park Saturday.
The “Head for The Cure 5K” is organized by Delta Theta Tau, a philanthropic sorority, and race chair Mandy Allen said the reason it comes every May is because that’s also Brain Cancer Awareness month.
“That’s why we picked May and we continue to pick May,” she said. “We’ve seen this event grow year after year and we are hoping to see it continue to grow as we raise more awareness in the county.”
Allen has been personally impacted– like many others around the area. Her father was diagnosed with brain cancer a few years ago, and she said she enjoys celebrating survivors through this race as well.
“We have [the family of] a brain tumor survivor and they decided to sell shirts this year leading up to our event and they are making a $500 donation at today’s race in honor of their son, Harrison, who is a survivor, which is just incredible,” she said.
In 2023, the fundraiser brought in over $2,000 for brain cancer research.
