TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A local elementary school sent a release home to families regarding the state of the building’s air conditioning system.
According to a release from Vigo County School Corporation’s Cheif Communications Officer Katie Shane, while the air conditioning system at Dixie Bee Elementary is struggling, the VCSC Facilities Operations Department is working to resolve the issue by placing fans around the school and renting a temporary chiller to supplement the current failing HVAC system.
“The VCSC Facilities Operations Department has taken quick action, placing fans throughout the school building,” Shane wrote. “Additionally, an ’emergency’ and temporary rental chiller has been shipped and is on schedule to be tied into the school’s cooling system in the coming week.”
Shane also noted that the school’s air conditioning system had already been recognized as a part of the 2024 HVAC upgrade and is scheduled for a replacement this upcoming winter. The school intends to use the rented chiller for the remainder of the warm months with a new chiller already ordered and on the way.
“The school will operate with a rental chiller for the remainder of this cooling season,” Shane said.
Shane also noted appreciation towards Dixie Bee families for their patience, explaining that the school is working on other temporary solutions that will help keep the school cool and have manageable temperatures that meet state requirements.
“I understand the frustration this may have caused and apologize for this inconvenience,” Shane said. “If you are not already, please send your student to school with a refillable water bottle and appropriate clothing for the warmer temperatures – especially during recess. Thank you for your understanding and patience. We look forward to a strong finish to the school year!”
