TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Law enforcement in Vigo County is asking for the public’s help in solving the 1980 homicide of Gloria Hedden.
On July 10, 1980, Gloria Hedden was reported missing and two days later her body was found in the Wabash River. At the time she was 29 years old, married almost 8 years, and had two children.
Vigo County Sheriff’s Office chief of operations Derek Fell said even after all this time the investigation continues.
“Sometimes new evidence and new information comes to light,” he said. “Technological advances improve as time goes on and relationships change whereas someone may have not wanted to speak to police when an incident happened. 5, 10, 20 years later, sometimes people change, and they want to come forward with the information they have.”
Fell said that Hedden was last seen leaving her workplace which is currently where the Vigo County Annex is. He added that Hedden’s body then was found in the river in the area behind the federal prison in Terre Haute two days later.
Fell said that he just wants to bring peace to the family.
“Ultimately, we just want to bring the killer to justice,” he said. “The wound is always there for the family. The void, the gap, the loss of a loved one, an arrest doesn’t change that but at the end of the day, if we can just bring a little bit of peace to the family by making an arrest, that is what we are going to do.”
Fell expressed that the community could be a massive help to this case.
“We believe that someone out there, maybe multiple people out there, know someone or something about the case,” he said “We ask that if you do to please contact the sheriff’s office as we would love to speak to you.”
Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to call detective sergeant Michael Ellsworth at 812-462-3226 extension 7304.
