TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Reduce, reuse, and recycle was the hot topic the afternoon at the Planet vs. Plastics Speak-off.
The effort was organized by ReTHink Inc., Emily`s Walk, Riverscapes, Ouabache Land Conservancy, the Audubon Society and support from the Vigo County Public Library. These organizations sent a call for participation to local students. More than 60 children responded with heartfelt videos sharing their thoughts on the critical issue of plastics and what their role is in our planet.
From these entries the top 10 contestants were selected to compete in a live contest. The co-founder of Emily’s Walk Christ Herrington said getting the students involved is important.
“You look at any organization’s success, you have to have kids involved. You have to have kids to inspire. You have to have kids to enthuse and you have to have kids to grow. So, were heartened that they’re involved and really glad that they’re here,” he said.
Top prize winners Maddie Graham and Lillian Henton both received $500. Second prize winner Leif Speer received $250. Third prize winners were Shambhavi Pawar and Azucena Vazquez, and they received $100 each.
In the young people category, Korben Swank won $100 and Jezebel Stuthers won $50.
An Outstanding Speaker Award and another special award from ISU Assistant Director of Business Engagement John Lotz went to Diarmuid Corcoran. Bob Baesler also handed out a $150 cash prize to Violet Templeton for her passion and eloquence.
Cash prizes were sponsored by Emily’s Walk.
