SULLIVAN COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A Princeton man has been arrested after deputies said he refused to pull over and led them on a 17-mile pursuit in rural Sullivan County.
According to Sullivan County Sheriff Jason Bobbitt, the incident occurred on Monday when a deputy attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle near the intersection of State Road 54 and County Road 200E.
The driver, Jonathan Opel, reportedly refused to pull over and continued west, eventually turning onto Private Road 965 W from C.R. 300N where Opel stopped the car and began to flee on foot.
The deputy who had attempted the traffic stop happened to be a K-9 handler and deployed K-9 officer Qlark which convinced Opel to surrender to arrest.
Sheriff Bobbitt said Opel was found to have a nationwide parole warrant for possession of methamphetamine. He was additionally charged with two counts of resisting law enforcement and taken to the Sullivan County Jail.
Sheriff Bobbitt thanked everyone involved in the incident for their work, including the Sullivan Police Department, Indiana State Police, and the Carlisle Town Marshal.
