INDIANA (WANE) — Hoosiers have one of the best chances to win the lottery according to a study released by CasinoUS.
The online casino guide CasinoUS analyzed the number of national lottery winners, both Powerball and Mega Millions, from each state to determine which states have the highest likelihood of being jackpot winners.
Indiana was lucky to take spot four on the list with an average of 0.60 winners per 100,000 people. Indiana saw the overall most luck with Powerball, as 39 people have been passed the big check, along with two Mega Millions winners.
Delaware took the top spot with an average win rate of 0.97 per 100,00 people. Since the inception of Powerball in 1992, 10 people have won in the state. See the full list of luckiest states below.

When it comes to lack of luck, states with the fewest winners are Colorado and Virginia. Virginia joined the national lottery in 1988, according to the state’s website, but has an average of 0.03 wins per 100,000 people. Colorado joined the national lottery in 1983, but has an average win rate of 0.05 per 100,000 people.
The top three states, North Dakota, Wyoming and Mississippi have a 0% win rate. These three states joined the national lottery rather recently with Mississippi joining in 2020, Wyoming joining in 2013 and North Dakota in 2004, which may be a reason for the lack of winners.

“While winning the lottery is down to luck, there are some ways you can increase your chances of success if you’re in a state that hasn’t had many wins to date. The easiest way is to make sure that you’re consistent with entering the lottery – you have to be in it to win it, and it’s easy to miss if an account error or payment fault means you’re not in the draw,” said Dave Cooper of CasinoUS.
