VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A $4.5 Million plan to demolish the old Vigo County Jail will soon take its next steps.
Thursday afternoon, Vigo County Commissioner Mark Clinkerbeard walked our crew through the old Vigo County Jail. The purpose of the walk-through was to further explain the plans for the jail.
During last week’s county update, the Vigo County Commissioners discussed a proposal to get rid of the building, which is currently vacant. That proposal would include moving equipment from the basement of the facility, demolishing the building, filling the land back up, and extending the road.
It would also include making a “green space” in that location that will factor into an initiative led by Art Spaces that focuses on establishing a better connection between downtown Terre Haute and the Wabash River.
Clinkenbeard said he believes this building has served its purpose and it’s not cost-effective to put any more money into it.
“They have a lot of questions and we’re trying to answer all those questions. We have a pretty detailed proposal. We’re working on it. We have some support but I don’t think we have enough yet. So, we believe it’s a worthwhile project and it needs to be done for several reasons,” he said.
The Vigo County Council will determine what happens next.
