VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A local voter registration office is getting the word out about the need for poll workers.
Indiana’s primary elections are on May 7 this year and with the presidential election also taking place this year, Vigo County Election Officials expect a lot of voters.
In order to prepare for the large number of expected voters, the Vigo County Election Office needs more qualified poll workers for when early voting begins and through election day. Officials also noted that they will need alternates available.
Jamie Norton and Bob Lawson are co-directors of the Vigo County Board of Voter Registration and they spoke out to those in Vigo County who may be interested in lending a hand at the polls
“It’s not as hard as you think it is,” Norton explained. “You do get training and you get paid for training. The one requirement is that you are a registered voter.”
Being a poll worker is a paid position. For those interested, call the Vigo County Voter Registration Office at 812-462-3393.
“We want to get the most qualified people we can and we like all ages,” Lawson said. “We like basically pulling from every part of the community. And if you don’t want to do it, perhaps you know someone that does have a thought they might like to try it. Have them call us.”
Lawson explained that 16-year-olds and 17-year-olds can also be poll workers although they’re not old enough yet to register to vote, the Hoosier Hall Pass Program allows them to work as a poll worker.
