TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A Terre Haute restaurant worker is facing charges after police say he attacked a coworker from behind with a blender blade causing the victim to “black out.”
According to court records, Dael Antonio Olin-Santos, 30, of Terre Haute, is facing a level 5 felony charge of battery by means of a deadly weapon.
A probable cause affidavit filed in Vigo County Superior Court 6 reveals what investigating Terre Haute Police Department Detectives say happened the night of February 19 at a Terre Haute restaurant.
That night police were dispatched to Union Hospital to speak with a person who had come in with injuries and claiming they were physically attacked by a co-worker.
The victim told police Olin-Santos works in the kitchen of the restaurant, and that evening he’d finished his work, but then continued to “hang around,” which the victim noted as odd, saying Olin-Santos usually leaves immediately after completing his work.
The victim said they were pushing a cart when suddenly they were struck in the back of the head.
“[Victim] advised he “blacked out” for a second and fell,” the PCA reads. “[Victim] advised he was struck again in the back of the head, at which time he turned around. [Victim] advised he saw Dael holding an industrial emersion blender blade which he was using to strike him with.”
The victim said Olin-Santos berated him verbally during the attack.
The victim claimed they were unsure what caused Olin-Santos to attack him.
Officers would reportedly find a bloody emersion blender blade at the restaurant while investigating the incident.
The victim had a laceration to their right hand caused by their attempts to block the blade-attack that required stitches, and visible wounds on the back of his head.
In an interview with Olin-Santos at THPD headquarters, the man reportedly told police that he had been having issues with the victim for a couple weeks.
“Dael advised at the time of the incident he was at his breaking point and admitted to battering [Victim],” the PCA reads.
Jail records show that following the interview with police, Olin-Santos was placed under arrest and taken to the Vigo County Jail. While initially held on a $25,000 bond with no 10% allowed, following an initial hearing, a judge released Olin-Santos on a recognizance bond.
Jail records indicate the man is next due to appear in court for a hearing at 1:30 p.m. on March 4.
