CLAY COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Update: One person has been arrested following a pursuit that traveled through portions of Terre Haute before coming to an end in Clay County.
According to Clay County Sheriff Brison Swearingen, the incident began just after 10 a.m. when there was a report of an attempted robbery at Advanced Auto Parts in Brazil, located at 611 E. National Avenue.
Swearingen said a deputy attempted a traffic stop on the suspect’s vehicle, but the driver refused to pull over and a pursuit began.
The pursuit traveled along U.S. 40 into Vigo County where the Clay County Sheriff’s Office disengaged with the chase. While in Terre Haute, ISP, ISU PD, the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office, and the Seelyville town marshal reportedly assisted in locating and pursuing the suspect vehicle. However, the car quickly turned back eastbound and re-entered Clay County along U.S. 40.
Indiana State Police confirmed the pursuit came to an end at U.S. 40 and C.R. 235 between Seelyville and Brazil at approximately 10:47 a.m.
Brazil Police Department Chief Clint McQueen explains how the pursuit came to an end.
“We were able to get that person stopped using the stop sticks or tire deflation devices,” he said. “A short foot pursuit occurred after that vehicle came to a rest. Officers then took that person into custody quickly, and that person is currently in the Clay County Jail incarcerated.”
Officials at the Clay County Jail confirmed that Bryan Shanholtz, 30, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was arrested in this incident. Jail records indicate that he faces preliminary charges of robbery, auto theft, theft, resisting law enforcement and reckless driving.
While on scene, Stidham noted seeing a white passenger vehicle near the location that ISP confirmed that the pursuit came to an end, but that vehicle was then towed away at 11:30 a.m.
