TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — On Tuesday, Woodrow Wilson Middle School in Terre Haute welcomed a special guest speaker in honor of Black History Month.
The students heard from Terre Haute Mayor Brandon Sakbun.
The mayor took questions from the students such as “Who inspires him?” and “What motivated him to serve in the U.S. military before running for mayor?”
Sakbun’s mother is from Jamaica and his father is from Cambodia.
Sakbun told students that regardless of a person’s background, the school corporation and community will prepare them for success.
“I feel inspired,” said 8th grader Lavaunt Cherry. “That makes me feel like I can do so in my life too. If he can do something, I can do something.”
“It motivated me to really try to inspire change,” 6th grader Violet Templeton said. “I’m also on student council, to inspire change in student council and in Woodrow Wilson as a whole.”
Sakbun, who attended Woodrow Wilson Middle School, said it was important to him to give back to his alma mater.
“I think it’s important for our kids, whether they’re in middle school, high school, or elementary school, to see what local government is doing, and to see some of the many projects that they’re working on and how they’re working to make Terre Haute a better place,” Sakbun said.
