TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)– The Coca-Cola mural on the outside of the Vigo Co. History Center has become iconic in Terre Haute.
However, it is in desperate need of restoration. It has gotten to the point to where it is starting to affect the inside exhibits.
“The paint doesn’t allow the water to escape, therefore it comes in and is causing all kinds of damage to the inside. We even have water that runs down the walls,” said executive director of the Vigo Co. History Center, Marla Flowers.
In November of 2023, the Brick-By-Brick campaign was started to raise funds for this restoration and so far, the community has raised over $51,000. These efforts were one of the driving forces for the Vigo Co. Council to use $49,500 of ARPA funds to help contribute.
Vigo Co. Commissioner Mark Clinkenbeard said that the preservation of the city’s history will always be a priority.
“This building is very important and being able to go inside the museum and see our history is really cool,” he said. “As a lifelong resident, I love to see it.”
Flowers says that it is a good feeling to know that community supports The History Center.
“Having the support of the commissioners and the county council is critically important to us,” she said. “Now, we are much closer than we ever could’ve been.”
