TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Local law enforcement departments paired with Indiana State University to raise funds for the Special Olympics.
Thursday evening, the Tip-a-Cop fundraising event was hosted at Texas Roadhouse. Law enforcement officers and department personnel volunteered their time as celebrity waiters to collect tips from customers. 100 percent of their tips will be donated to Special Olympics through the annual Polar Plunge of Terre Haute.
Officials with local law enforcement said this event is special to the community.
“If you’ve ever attended the special Olympics and you see the competitors, and the family members, and what they do to experience and go through it, it makes it that much more beneficial that we can help out and raise money to help sponsor that,” Sergeant with THPD Justin Sears said.
“This is my 25th year being involved with Special Olympics Indiana and just to see all these people come out is amazing,” Sergeant with ISU Jacquelin Smith said.
The Polar Plunge will be held on Saturday, February 24 at Indiana State University. Registration is from 10:30 a.m. To 11:30 the day of the event. The plunge itself starts at noon.
*Update: Indiana State University Police Sergeant Jacqueline Smith reports that the Tip-A-Cop program raised $2,789.50 for Special Olympics.
