WASHINGTON, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Students at a Washington elementary school were kept indoors due to a police investigation in the area.
According to Washington Community Schools Communications Coordinator Tori Peterson, the school was made aware of the situation at 11 a.m. on Wednesday.
“Washington Community Schools was notified by the Daviess County Dispatch at approximately 11:00 am on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, to be advised that officials were investigating a break-in in the area surrounding Washington Veale Elementary,” Peterson said. “Students were kept inside today with no outdoor recess and additional police officers were present during the school day. Administrators were in contact with families, and the school dismissed as normal this afternoon.”
Little information regarding the break-in incident has been released, Daviess County Sheriff Gary Allison said following the initial report, law enforcement notified the school out of an abundance of caution, saying there was never any threat to the school directly.
Allison said deputies cleared the area as best they could and searched on scene for 3-hours for two men a homeowner had alleged broke into her home. Allison said they used a K-9 and drone as well and were unable to locate anything nearby.
In a post to Facebook, Sheriff Allison said the residence was in the vicinity of 400 S. and Troy Road. The description of the suspects was two males dressed in black with an unknown direction of travel.
The investigation is ongoing, anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 812-254-1060
