TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — After his first month in office, Terre Haute Mayor Brandon Sakbun visited the studio to discuss some of the programs, issues, and events happening in the community.
Sakbun covered many topics, including the local officers appointed to the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force along with other new local government staff, infrastructure goals, the progress and impacts of the Terre Haute Casino development, and issues and future plans regarding dilapidated housing throughout the city.
“The city does have quite a long list of some vacant properties that we made the decision to transfer the ownership over,” Sakbun explained. “We partnered with several developers to get some paperwork ready to apply for some of these Thrive programs and just start rebuilding on vacant lots. Why is this important? One, it increases our housing stock. We’ve got a lot of Hoosiers here who need to get into a house. We’ve got one of the oldest housing stocks in the state of Indiana. So, we’re adding to our housing inventory with programs just like this. Two, it increases our tax base, higher opportunity for us to get property tax with more lots being built and developed on. And Three, it sets us up for more success in the future as our current companies that are here continue to grow.”
Viewers can expect the mayor to visit the studio to continue discussions regarding the Terre Haute community every month.
