FARMERSBURG, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – They bend rims, dislodge wheel covers and some can loosen the fillings in your teeth. Not to mention leading to colorful language. Potholes. The enemy of every vehicle. So how do potholes form?
Water seeps in through cracks in the road which collects underneath, softening the road base.
Once the water freezes, it expands and forces the pavement upwards. Traffic adds extra stress on the weakened pavement.
Once drier weather arrives, the water dissipates leaving a hole under the pavement.
The weight of passing vehicles causes the road surface to collapse into the hole.
The pothole is formed where the road collapsed. Continuous traffic causes the pothole to widen and deepen.
